Chomsky Dismisses 911 Conspiracy Theories As ‘Dubious’

The following is an exchange between a ZNet  Sustainer and Noam Chomsky, which took place in the Sustainer Web Board where Noam hosts a forum…

ZNet Sustainer: Dear Noam, There is much documentation observed and uncovered by the 911 families themselves suggesting a criminal conspiracy within the Bush Administration to cover-up the 9/11 attacks (see DVD, 9/11: Press for Truth). Additionally, much evidence has been put forward to question the official version of events. This has come in part from Paul Thompson, an activist who has creatively established the 9/11 Timeline, a free 9/11 investigative database for activist researchers, which now, according to The Village Voice’s James Ridgeway, rivals the 9/11 Commission’s report in accuracy and lucidity (see,
http://www.villagevoice.com/news/0416,mondo1,52830,6.html,
or www.cooperativeresearch.org).

Noam Chomsky: Hard for me to respond to the rest of the letter, because I am not persuaded by the assumption that much documentation and other evidence has been uncovered. To determine that, we’d have to investigate the alleged evidence. Take, say, the physical evidence. There are ways to assess that: submit it to specialists — of whom there are thousands — who have the requisite background in civil-mechanical engineering, materials science, building construction, etc., for review and analysis; and one cannot gain the required knowledge by surfing the internet. In fact, that’s been done, by the professional association of civil engineers. Or, take the course pursued by anyone who thinks they have made a genuine discovery: submit it to a serious journal for peer review and publication. To my knowledge, there isn’t a single submission.

ZNet Sustainer: A question that arises for me is that regardless of this issue, how do I as an activist prevent myself from getting distracted by such things as conspiracy theories instead of focusing on the bigger picture of the institutional analysis of private profit over people?

Noam Chomsky: I think this reaches the heart of the matter. One of the major consequences of the 9/11 movement has been to draw enormous amounts of energy and effort away from activism directed to real and ongoing crimes of state, and their institutional background, crimes that are far more serious than blowing up the WTC would be, if there were any credibility to that thesis. That is, I suspect, why the 9/11 movement is treated far more tolerantly by centers of power than is the norm for serious critical and activist work. How do you personally set priorities? That’s of course up to you. I’ve explained my priorities often, in print as well as elsewhere, but we have to make our own judgments.

ZNet Sustainer: In a sense, profit over people is the real conspiracy, yes, yet not a conspiracy at all ­ rather institutional reality? At the same time, if the core of conspiracy theories are accurate, which is challenging to pin down, though increasingly possible, does it not fit into the same motivations of furthering institutional aims of public subsidizes to private tyrannies? I mean, through the 9/11attacks, Bush Et Al. has been able to justify massive increases in defense spending for a “war without end,” and Israel has been given the green light to do virtually whatever it wants since now ‘the Americans are in the same fight.’ Furthermore, there has been a substantial rollback of civil rights in our nation, with the most extreme example being strong attempt to terminate habeas corpus.

Noam Chomsky: Can’t answer for the same reasons. I don’t see any reason to accept the presuppositions. As for the consequences, in one of my first interviews after 9/11 I pointed out the obvious: every power system in the world was going to exploit it for its own interests: the Russians in Chechnya, China against the Uighurs, Israel in the occupied territories,… etc., and states would exploit the opportunity to control their own populations more fully through “prevention of terrorism acts” and the like. By the “who gains” argument, every power system in the world could be assigned responsibility for 9/11.

ZNet Sustianer: This begs the question: if 9/11 was an inside job, then what’s to say that Bush Et Al., if cornered or not, wouldn’t resort to another more heinous attack of grander proportions in the age of nuclear terrorism ­ which by its very nature would petrify populations the world over, leading citizens to cower under the Bush umbrella of power.

Noam Chomsky: Wrong question, in my opinion. They were carrying out far more serious crimes, against Americans as well, before 9/11 — crimes that literally threaten human survival. They may well resort to further crimes if activists here prefer not to deal with them and to focus their attention on arcane and dubious theories about 9/11.

ZNet Sustainer: Considering that in the US there are stage-managed elections, public relations propaganda wars, and a military-industrial-education-prison-etc. complex, does something like this sound far-fetched?

Noam Chomsky: I think that’s the wrong way to look at it. Everything you mention goes back far before 9/11, and hasn’t changed that much since. More evidence that the 9/11 movement is diverting energy and attention away from far more serious crimes — and in this case crimes that are quite real and easily demonstrated.

ZNet Sustainer:Considering the long history of false flag operations to wrongly justify wars, our most recent precedent being WMD in Iraq, The Gulf of Tonkin in Vietnam, going back much further to Pearl Harbor (FDR knowingly allowing the Japanese to bomb Pearl Harbor ­ which is different from false flag operations), to the 1898 Spanish-American War, to the 1846 Mexican-American War, to Andrew Jackson’s seizing of Seminole land in 1812 (aka Florida).

Noam Chomsky: The concept of “false flag operation” is not a very serious one, in my opinion. None of the examples you describe, or any other in history, has even a remote resemblance to the alleged 9/11 conspiracy. I’d suggest that you look at each of them carefully.

ZNet Sustainer: Lastly, as the world’s leading terror state, would it not surprise anyone if the US was capable of such an action? Would it surprise you? Do you think that so-called conspiracy theorists have anything worthy to present?

Noam Chomsky: I think the Bush administration would have had to be utterly insane to try anything like what is alleged, for their own narrow interests, and do not think that serious evidence has been provided to support claims about actions that would not only be outlandish, for their own interests, but that have no remote historical parallel. The effects, however, are all too clear, namely, what I just mentioned: diverting activism and commitment away from the very serious ongoing crimes of state.

Ex: What is the role of the intellectual when dealing with imperialism and are the intellectuals doing they job?

Ch: Unfortunately, intellectuals are doing their historic job. The historic role of intellectuals if you look, unfortunately, as far back as you go has been to support power systems and to justify their atrocities. So the article you read in the National Post for the production of vulgar Stalinist connoisseurs, that’s what intellectuals usually do as far back as you go.

If you go back to the Bible, there’s a category of people who were called prophets, a translation of an obscure word, they were intellectuals, they were what we would call dissident intellectuals; criticising the evil king, giving geopolitical analysis, calling for the moral treatment of orphans, decent behaviour. They were dissident intellectuals. Were they treated well? They were prisoned and driven into the dessert and so on, they were the fringe. The people who were treated well were the ones who centuries later, like in the gospel, were called false prophets. So it goes through history. The actual role of the intellectual has been supportive of power.

Should they do that? Of course not; they should be searching for truth, they should be honest, they should be supporting freedom and justice and there are some who do it. There is a fringe who do it, but they’re not treated well. They are performing the task that intellectuals ought to perform.

So, did you ever belive those phony explanations they always give when someone is ‘leaved’ from office?

But my main reason for posting this article is that – again – the comments on ‘information Clearing House’ articles are extremely interesting to read, and they are so refreshingly (relatively) unpoluted of aggressive ad hominim attacks.

Many of the commenters argue that the tail wags the dog, but some also argue that it’s the dog’s master that wags both, ie: the New World Order – Illuminati – Rothchild – global cabal…

Also some of the comments bring very interesting information about the historic origins of the jews. After having read some of this info you must think that anybody who uses term ‘anti-semitic’ of Israel-critics must be really badly informed, because most Jews in Israel are really not Semites, they’re Ashkenazis from Khazaria, and it’s actually their neighbor arabs who are Semites. But of course that’s a topic of discussion.
There’s also some accusations of Chomsky being a multi-millionaire-krypto-zionist! and an Israel apologist.

Until the latest of our world conflicts, the United States had no armaments industry. American makers of plowshares could, with time and as required, make swords as well. But now we can no longer risk emergency improvisation of national defense; we have been compelled to create a permanent armaments industry of vast proportions. Added to this, three and a half million men and women are directly engaged in the defense establishment. We annually spend on military security more than the net income of all United States corporations.

This conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. The total influence-economic, political, even spiritual-is felt in every city, every state house, every office of the Federal government. We recognize the imperative need for this development. Yet we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications. Our toil, resources and livelihood are all involved; so is the very structure of our society.

In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.

We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together.

Kritikk av Israel er rasisme?

Så var det mange som ikke anerkjente Saddam Husseins Irak, eller serbernes etniske rensing. Nå må vi venne oss til tanken: Staten Israel i sin nåværende form er historie.

Vi tror ikke på forestillingen om Guds utvalgte folk. Vi ler av dette folkets griller og gråter over dets misgjerninger. Å opptre som Guds utvalgte folk er ikke bare dumt og arrogant, men en forbrytelse mot menneskeheten. Vi kaller det rasisme.

Grenser for toleranse.

Det er grenser for vår tålmodighet, og det er grenser for vår toleranse. Vi tror ikke på guddommelige løfter som begrunnelse for okkupasjon og apartheid. Vi har lagt middelalderen bak oss. Vi sier bare: Skam over all apartheid, skam over etnisk rensing, skam over samtlige terroranslag mot sivilbefolkning enten de begås av Hamas, Hizballah eller staten Israel!

Skruppelløs krigskunst.

Vi erkjenner og tar inn over oss Europas dype ansvar for jødenes skjebne, for den skjendige mobbingen, pogromene og Holocaust. Det var historisk og moralsk nødvendig at jødene fikk sitt eget hjem. Men staten Israel har med sin skruppelløse krigskunst og sine motbydelige våpen massakrert sin egen legitimitet. Den har systematisk forbrutt seg mot folkeretten, internasjonale konvensjoner og et utall FN-resolusjoner og kan ikke lenger forvente beskyttelse fra samme hold. Den har teppebombet verdens anerkjennelse. Men frykt ikke! Trengselstidene er snart over. Staten Israel har sett sitt Soweto.Vi er ved vannskillet nå. Det er ingen vei tilbake. Staten Israel har voldtatt verdens anerkjennelse og får ikke fred før den legger ned sine våpen.

Uten forsvar, uten hud.

Måtte ånd og ord blåse Israels apartheidmurer overende. Staten Israel eksisterer ikke. Den er uten forsvar nå, uten hud. Må verden derfor se i nåde til sivilbefolkningen. For det er ikke de sivile enkeltmennesker våre domsprofetier er rettet mot.Vi vil alt folket i Israel vel, alt vel, men vi forbeholder oss retten til å ikke spise Jaffa-appelsiner så lenge de smaker vondt og er giftige. Det var overkommelig å leve i noen år uten de blå apartheiddruene.

De feirer triumfene.

Vi tror ikke at Israel sørger mer over førti drepte libanesiske barn enn de i mer enn tre tusen Ã¥r har jamret over førti Ã¥r i ørkenen. Vi noterer oss at mange israelere feirer slike triumfer slik de en gang jublet over Herrens landeplager som “passende straff” for det egyptiske folk. Blodhevnens gjengjeldelse.

Vi anerkjenner ikke staten Israels retorikk. Vi anerkjenner ikke blodhevnens gjengjeldelsesspiral med “øye for øye og tann for tann”. Vi anerkjenner ikke prinsippet om ti eller tusen arabiske øyne for ett israelsk øye. Vi anerkjenner ikke kollektiv straff eller populasjonsslankekurer som politisk vÃ¥pen. To tusen Ã¥r er gÃ¥tt siden en jødisk rabbi kritiserte den urgamle doktrine om “øye for øye og tann for tann”.Han sa: “Alt dere vil at andre skal gjøre mot dere, skal ogsÃ¥ dere gjøre mot dem”. Vi anerkjenner ikke en stat som tuftes pÃ¥ antihumanistiske prinsipper og ruinene av en arkaisk nasjonalreligion og krigsreligion. Eller som Albert Schweitzer utla det: “Humanitet vil si aldri Ã¥ ofre et menneske for en sak”.

Vi anerkjenner ikke det gamle Davidsriket som normgivende for det 21. århundres kart over Midtøsten. Den jødiske rabbi hevdet for to tusen år siden at Guds rike ikke er en krigersk gjenreising av Davidsriket, men at Guds rike er inni oss og iblant oss. Guds rike er barmhjertighet og tilgivelse.To tusen år er gått siden den jødiske rabbi avvæpnet og gjennomhumaniserte gammel krigsretorikk. Allerede på hans tid opererte de første sionistiske terrorister.

Israel hører ikke.

I to tusen Ã¥r har vi terpet humanismens pensum, men Israel hører ikke. Det var ikke fariseeren som hjalp mannen som lÃ¥ i veikanten fordi han var falt blant røvere. Det var en samaritaner, i dag ville vi si en palestiner. For først er vi mennesker – kristen, muslim eller jøde sÃ¥. Eller som den jødiske rabbi sa: “Og om dere hilser vennlig pÃ¥ deres egne, er det noe storartet?” Vi aksepterer ikke bortføring av soldater. Men vi anerkjenner ikke deportasjon av hele folkegrupper eller bortføring av lovlig valgte parlamentsmedlemmer og regjeringsmedlemmer heller.Vi anerkjenner staten Israel av 1948, men ikke den av 1967. Det er staten Israel som ikke anerkjenner, respekterer og bøyer seg for den folkerettslige staten Israel av 1948. Israel vil ha mer, mer vann og flere landsbyer. For Ã¥ oppnÃ¥ dette vil enkelte med Guds hjelp ha en endelig løsning pÃ¥ palestinerspørsmÃ¥let. Palestinerne har sÃ¥ mange andre land, har enkelte israelske politikere hevdet, vi har bare ett.

USA eller verden?

Eller som staten Israels høyeste beskytter uttrykker det: “May God continue to bless America.” Det var et lite barn som bet seg merke i det. Hun vendte seg mot sin mor og sa: “Hvorfor avslutter presidenten alltid sine taler med Ã¥ si God bless America? Hvorfor sier han ikke God bless the world?”SÃ¥ var det en gang en norsk dikter som ga fra seg følgende barnlige hjertesukk: “Hvi skrider Menneskeheden saa langsomt frem?” Det var han som skrev sÃ¥ vakkert om “Jøden” og “Jødinden”. Men han avviste forestillingen om Guds utvalgte folk. Selv kalte han seg muhammedaner.

Sindighet og miskunn.

Vi anerkjenner ikke staten Israel. Ikke i dag, ikke i skrivende stund, ikke i sorgens og vredens time. Hvis hele den israelske nasjon skulle falle for eget grep og deler av befolkningen må flykte fra sine okkuperte områder tilbake til nok en diaspora, så sier vi: Må omgivelsene være sindige og vise miskunn med dem nå. Det er for evig og alltid en forbrytelse uten formildende omstendigheter å legge hånd på flyktninger og statsløse.Fred og fritt leide for den evakuerende sivilbefolkning som ikke lenger har noen stat som kan beskytte dem. Ikke skyt på flyktningene! Ikke sikt på dem! De er sårbare som snegler uten sneglehus nå, sårbare som langsomme karavaner av palestinske og libanesiske flyktninger, forsvarsløse som kvinner og barn og gamle i Qana, Gaza, Sabra og Shatila. Gi de israelske flyktningene husrom, gi dem melk og honning!La ikke ett israelsk barn bøte med livet. Altfor mange barn og sivile er myrdet allerede. Det her er en storartet tale af David Ray Griffin – ogsÃ¥ selvom den tilsyneladende er henvendt til religiøse mennesker. Jeg er selv absolut IKKE religiøs og normalt ret allergisk overfor mange religiøse buskaber, men her betragter jeg den religiøse indpakning, som værende mestendels Griffins forsøg pÃ¥ at fÃ¥ en bestemt gruppe mennesker i tale, som han i kraft af sin teologiske baggrund kan forvente at have en hvis ‘credit’ hos.

Det er nemlig stort set det samme materiale, som han har benyttet i andre lignende taler, og det religiøse indhold begrænser sig egentlig til at være en slags introduktion, ud fra et meget generisk inter-religions værdisæt om at redde hvalerne – og det synes jeg selv som ikke-religiøs jo ogsÃ¥ at man skal, sÃ¥ det er helt fjong med mig!

Den er ogsÃ¥ god som introduktion til – og overblik over 911sandhed’s dagsordenen, især for danskere, fordi den her er i en dansk tekstet version.

I always find it refreshing to see the ideals of rational thinking presented clearly.

It’s such a nice counterbalance to the often rabid and partisan views presented here in my blog, by others… and myself! 

I think this article provides not only straight guidelines for teaching in academia, but also more broadly for approaching any study, and in particular the study of 9/11.

The most interesting aspect of this to me, is to see Scott Ritter’s stance on 9/11.

He is not ready to “Jump the bandwaggon”, but he certainly doesn’t ridicule the idea that 9/11 could be an inside job. He notices that the 9/11 report lacks transparency.

To Scott the most important aspect of 9/11 is that no matter who inflicted the attack, subsequently – the very next day actually – the Government exploited the attack to deceive USA into two wars on false pretenses. And this lying in itself is by Scott’s admission enough to indict the president.

Unfortunately the sound quality of this clip is rather bad.

(How come the audio-quality of 9/11 recordings are often soo bad? What about some professionalism here?
